Zcash (ZEC) implements zero-knowledge proof (zk-SNARK) shielded transactions that cryptographically hide sender, receiver, and amount. Shielded addresses start with z; transparent addresses start with t. Swapping Zcash without KYC gets you the strongest cryptographic privacy guarantee available in a major cryptocurrency — if you actually use shielded mode.
About Zcash
Zcash launched in 2016 with the Sprout zk-SNARK shielded pool, upgraded to Sapling in 2018 (massively improved performance) and Orchard in 2022 (stronger cryptographic properties). Block times are 75 seconds; the chain is a Bitcoin fork with modified UTXO to support the shielded pool.
The critical caveat: most ZEC volume flows through transparent (t-)addresses, not shielded (z-)addresses. The shielded pool has a meaningful but smaller anonymity set than Monero because fewer users opt in. Verify your wallet actually uses z-addresses.
How to swap Zcash without KYC
- Hold ZEC in a shielded-capable wallet (Zcash Wallet, Zashi, Ywallet, Nighthawk).
- Move funds into the shielded pool first if they are in a t-address.
- Open the widget, ZEC as send, pick destination. Send from your shielded balance.
Zcash privacy notes
- Shielded is opt-in. Always verify the address prefix. z-address is shielded; t-address is transparent.
- Cross-pool movement leaves a footprint. Moving from t → z then z → t can be profiled via amount correlation if you\'re not careful.
- For the largest anonymity set in practice, use Monero. For the strongest cryptographic guarantee in a shielded pool, use Zcash. Pick by threat model.
